The Advantages of Coloring to Children

I think sometimes as teachers, many of us are apprehensive about giving children a page to color. It seems giving children pictures to color are frowned upon because there are other ways to present activities. But, there are benefits to coloring. I was recently reminded of that while reading my Handwriting Without Tears(HWT) guide. I wanted to share these with you so we could all remember how important this skill is. Even for Mom and Dad, yes, coloring pictures has its benefits.
According to my HWT guide, developed by Jan Z. Olsen, coloring is fun for children, and it does allow them to be creative. As children develop, we also see development in their coloring. Young colorers will color broadly over the illustration. As the children develop their skills, their movements will become smaller and more precise. Coloring also has “great benefits for developing coordination, grip, and strength.”
By observing coloring one can also determine a child’s handwriting readiness. Things to look for to help determine a child’s handwriting readiness are: “Attention, crayon grip, posture/strength/endurance, and the use of the helping hand(the hand that holds the paper).”

The Set-up in Classroom

The set up of a classroom is very important to how a classroom is being managed. The teacher needs to make sure his/her classroom is arranged for the students to be productive. The teacher also needs to make sure their classroom has a positive environment for the students as they enter the classroom. Another key fact a teacher needs to consider is that their classroom needs to be ready for learning every day. This is because in order to manage a classroom with proper discipline, a product and active classroom set-up is important. The students need to be placed in an arrangement that will keep them focused on the lesson and not deter them from learning. In this paper, we will discuss and provide ways for a lower elementary classroom to be set up.
Our map shows the classroom is arranged in centers. The students will sit in groups of six in four different groups. The reasoning behind the groups is that the students will be able to learn how to work with others. The students will also be able to motivate each other to do their work. The desks are arranged in the middle of the classroom so it will allow the teacher to walk around the room freely. Plus the teacher will be able to control the students in a more compact area. The setting of the desk will also help students to stay on task.

K–12 (pronounced “k twelve”, “k through twelve”, or “k to twelve”) is a designation for the sum of primary and secondary education. It is used in the United States, Canada, and Australia. P–12 is also occasionally used in Australia. The expression is a shortening of Kindergarten (K) for 4–6-year-olds through twelfth grade (12) for 16–19-year-olds, the first and last grades of free education in these countries.
The term is often used in school website URLs, generally appearing before the country code top-level domain (or in the United States, the state top-level domain). The term “PK–12″ is sometimes used to add pre-kindergarten.
It is also used by American multinationals selling into the educational sector, such as Dell where UK customers are presented with this as a market segment choice.

How to Get Learning Disabled Children College Prepared

Learning disabilities account for the fastest growing disability among college students. There are certain government mandates that help college students receive an education without discrimination. These government criteria spell out what is necessary for a child to receive the help that they deserve during their college years. Parents should be working with a counselor who is familiar with these guidelines. Parents and their child need to be proactive in getting the offered assistance once the child enters college.

A learning disabled child should have a strong support system in place during their formative high school years. Parents need to ensure that their child is eligible for the help that they may be counting on, so make sure that applications are sent out to colleges that you know has extra tutoring and student support. Also, many find that colleges with smaller class sizes can be helpful for the disabled learner. A student must possess the ability to pursue the degree that they desire despite their disability. This is assured by specific testing that must be completed within a three year window of entering college. The student must decide if the disability is to be disclosed. This is a privacy right that not even parents can overturn.

The Legendary Mount Hibok-hibok

Hibok-Hibok volcano, also called Catarman, has a summit formed of loose ejectamenta. It has several craterlets at or near its crest, some representing shallow lakes. The present crater area at the northeast slope facing Mambajao was mined for sulfur before the volcano’s activity in 1948. Rock is normal andesite with augite, little hypersthene and olivine. Plagioclase is oligoclase with little labradorite. Some lavas contain hornblende.

The first recorded eruption of Hibok-Hibok occurred in 1827. This was followed by similar activity in 1862. Both eruptions caused destruction to arable lands.
In January 1871, earthquakes and subterranean rumbling sounds disturbed the north end of Camiguin island. Landslides and fissuring destroyed trees and plantations. When the swarm of earthquake ceased in April of the same year, an explosion followed accompanied by a shower of rocks, dust, and ashes. Destruction was complete within a radius of 3 km from the new vent. The eruption continued for a week, and a volcanic dome called Vulcan began to form 3.5 km from the general area of Hibok-Hibok. After four years of activity, the adventive lava dome reached a height of 457 m with a base nearly 1.5 km in diameter.
Vulcan is quiet at present and appears to have been unaffected by the activity of the adjacent Hibok-Hibok. Vulcan’s activity has been limited to emission of small amounts of steam from crevices at the top of the dome.
In 1897, the area occupied by the present dome of Hibok-Hibok emitted white sulfurous vapors which ruined agricultural lands. Solfataric activity continued up to 1902 when a thunderstorm occurred around the volcano and a new solfataric vent formed opposite the crest. Frequent subterranean sounds were noted during the activity which lasted for 8 to 10 days.

The Historical Mactan Island

Mactan is an island located a few kilometres from Cebu Island in the Philippines. The island is part of Cebu Province and it is divided into Lapu-Lapu City and the municipality of Cordova. The island is separated from Cebu by the Mactan Channel which is crossed by two bridges: the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge.
The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the country’s second busiest airport is located on Mactan island. The island was a Muslim settlement before it was colonized by Spain in the 16th century. Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived on the island in 1521 and became involved in tribal warfare among the tribal groups, only to be killed in battle by the warriors of Datu Lapu-Lapu, one of the chieftains in the island.

By 1730, Augustinian friars established the town of Opon, that was later renamed as the city of Lapu-Lapu by means of the Republic Act 3134, signed by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia on June 17, 1961.

The Serengeti Safari in Tanzania

As the sun began to climb over Serengeti National Park, I took stock of the evidence before me. I had woken up to find my bathroom, a tiny canvas-walled cubicle behind my tent, in ruins. The shredded remains of what had once been my spare roll of toilet paper littered the ground. My soap lay in one corner, gnawed down into a misshapen hunk.
I shivered in the early morning chill and drew my windbreaker tighter around my torso. Looking over the damage, I couldn’t stop thinking about the pair of hyenas that had watched us from the roadside brush the afternoon before, tongues lolling out of their stubby snouts in the searing heat. To imagine one of them chewing on my toiletries just feet away from the tent where I was sleeping was less than comforting.
Every year, thousands of visitors flock to northern Tanzania to see the legendary wildlife that has made the Serengeti a household name. As many of them discover, some of the wildlife is more than happy to return the favor. For adventure-seekers of all ages, the Serengeti offers the chance to explore one of Earth’s most iconic and mesmerizing wildernesses, a world where lions still rule supreme and nature doesn’t close after business hours.

Find Peace at South Island, New Zealand

Hiking, or ‘tramping’, is a popular activity in New Zealand. Beautiful beaches, snow capped peaks, and clear blue streams all can be found inside the country’s national park system. The Abel Tasman National Park, located on the remote northwest corner of the south island, is often missed by tourists. My solitary experience of walking the 32 miles (51 km) coastal trail and seeing hardly anyone except Mother Nature herself was an amazing experience.
It should be noted that the coastal trail, while well-maintained, offers little in the way of facilities or mobile phone coverage. Walkers should be prepared with food and drink, proper footwear, cold/wet weather gear, and first aid supplies. You must also carry a map and research coastal tides prior to departure in order to complete the length of the route safely.
My route took me from south to north, which is the most common and easiest to link in with public transport; there are other combinations you might find more suitable.
Department of Conservation huts are the only accommodation available in most parts of the park; they must be booked well in advance, especially in summer, and they are minimally appointed so be sure to pack appropriately. They have showers and toilets but no hot water. The huts do have kitchens but without any gas/electric, cutlery, pans, or other necessities – you will need to bring it all with you. Sleeping arrangements are bunk beds; take a sleeping bag and a pillow.

Every landscape is a canvas for cartoon-crazy architecture, everybody a mannequin for inhuman costumes, every battle blow a candidate for slo-mo glory. Without any narrative heft, these sights don’t last in the mind much longer than they linger on screen. And yet they thrill in short-lived bursts that Singh doles out carefully, keeping pace with the audience’s appetite. It’s his name that ought to be above the title.
