A Photo Studio

February 2nd, 2012

The most important decision you will make setting up your photography studio is where to put it. A bad space will create all sorts of lighting nightmares and will make it impossible to take a good picture. A good space will help make your photography lighting setup almost effortless. Try to choose a space that can be used exclusively as a photography studio.

Choose a space that is at least the size of a large bedroom. Bigger is better. A high ceiling is a nice plus since you can hang lights from a high ceiling. Choose walls that are plain and consistent. If there are too many things hanging on the walls or they are different colors, they will reflect light differently. A photography studio should ideally be covered in off white matte paint.Choose a photography studio with an electrical system that can handle the demands of a lot of lights on at the same time. Lights use a lot of electricity. You wont be able to take many photographs if the fuses keep blowing.Choose a photography studio with adequate air conditioning. Lights get very hot and the studio will feel like an oven if the air conditioning is not running all the time. If you are in a commercial building, be sure you have access to an independent thermostat so you can control your own air conditioning level.Choose a space that has openings to the outside that can be covered and controlled. You must be able to eliminate light you don’t want.
